So, what is Hemp? Hemp is a plant that is grown in many different parts of the world. Hemp has also been referred to as Cannabis and Marijuana. You read that right the hemp plant is also known as the plant Marijuana. With this in mind, it may come as a surprise that the Hemp plant is now being used as a natural material used to make clothing. Just like other natural fiber materials such as cotton and wool, the plant hemp has been discovered to be a great green alternative to man made fabrics when making clothing. Hemp is also an economical way for manufacturers to use natural fibers to create clothing, since unlike cotton hemp can grow practically anywhere and needs very little care or maintenance. Plus, hemp can easily be blended with other natural materials such as cotton to create many different types of fabrics for making various types of clothing.

The types of clothing that can be created with hemp are endless in range in variety. These types of clothing include T-shirts; lady’s blouses and even evening wear for men and women. You can even find dog accessories and toys made from hemp! T-shirts that were once made primarily from cotton are now being made with hemp as well, because like cotton hemp can easily be dyed different colors and is very comfortable to wear. Women’s blouses being made from hemp are considered lightweight and come in different styles including styles that are more formal. Eveningwear made from hemp can range from evening gowns to formal dress suits for men.

One place where clothing made from hemp could probably be purchased is Flowland.net. The website Flowland.net is an online store that claims to offer a wide range of different different products that may not be found easily else where including funky clothing? So there is no doubt that clothing made from hemp can be found on this website. Perhaps in the future hemp will start to become more of a widely use natural fibber such as cotton, but in the mean time websites such as flowland.net can be source to help find clothes that have been made from hemp.

I am one of those crazy pet people who thinks of their dogs and cats as children because I do not have any human children of my own. Quite frankly, my pets are plenty to keep me busy and they definitely are not cheap. And like people who are crazy about their kids, I take a ton of pictures of my pets. I know to a lot of you it is weird, but remember these are my children. Sometimes it can be difficult to get shots that I am wanting to get of my furry loved ones because they don’t really get why I am so camera happy. You might have faced the same problem too. Here are some pointers on how to get awesome photographs of your pets.

Use treats to your advantage. The cat you see below in the adorable costume looking mildly irritated is my friend’s cat, Jules. Jules loves tuna. She loves it so much she is willing to put on this costume and sit, poised for a camera for as long as it is needed. That’s the power of a treat, my friends. If your pet seems to always have the wiggles when you break out the camera, try to get him or her to settle by using a treat.

Capture the candid shots. Sure those sweet posed shots are really cute, but candid shots can be just as cute. They also happen to be easier to catch because you don’t have to deal with the act of trying to get your pet still and posed. Take your camera with you on a walk or get some shots of Fluffy while he or shes sleeps. The sleeping pictures are especially cute.

Make sure the lighting is right. This is more of a suggestion to ensure that you are getting the best quality of you photos. When it is too dark and the artificial lights are on pets eyes can get a sort of glow. The best light is natural light when you are taking pictures.

There is nothing cuter than a dog dressed up for Christmas, and this year is no exception. This year’s Christmas fashions are cuter than they’ve ever been for dogs and cats, so not dressing your puppy for the occasion is pretty much out of the question. Pet specialty stores like Pet Smart and others even have some really cute Hanukkah gifts for dogs, including a Dreidel chew toy for large dogs, and a plushie Menorah for smaller pets. There are holiday themed jackets, leashes, and pet beds. There are snacks and treats for animals of all species, and if you haven’t found your lifelong furry friend yet, many Humane Society chapters in local pet stores hold their annual adoption drives during this time of the year and it would be the perfect opportunity to make yourself and a lonely pet happy.

So, to get you in the mood for holiday joy and spending some quality time with a pet, let’s look at this ultra cute infographic entitled 12 Dogs of Christmas, that shows some of the world’s most beloved breeds as part of the lyrics in the timeless classic carol, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

Have you ever seen pictures of dogs beside their owners and noticed that, after a few years, they begin to look a bit alike? Or perhaps people and dogs who resemble one another in some way are already naturally attracted to each other for camaraderie and fun. It’s no secret that we have a lot in common with our canine friends; human and dog family structures are at least passingly similar, and dogs (being the descendants of wolves, and thus inclined to have a pack mentality) tend to respect the established hierarchical structure of their human families. This is not to say that they would never test the limits, but by and large, a dog who settles into a household of family members come to regard those people as his pack, and will accept the role assigned to him by the perceived alpha male (or female, should no clear male role model be present.)

Dogs are amazingly similar to humans in other ways as well, and sometimes we forget just how different dogs and humans really are. It’s easy, after all, with so much in common. Still, if you’re looking for a quick crash course on the ways in which dogs and people differ, watching programming on Animal Planet on direct tv is a good place to start. Another is to click on teh infographic below to make it full sized, and enjoy the data presented there.

All puppies bite. They don’t bite to be mean, or to be aggressive — not naturally, anyway. Puppies have other reasons for biting and mouthing, and before you can break them of these habits, you have to know what the reason is for your particular puppy. Breaking a young dog of inappropriate biting requires a little application of dog psychology. A puppy will bite when he needs something from you: attention, food, playtime. Those are not behavior problems, and should never be responded to with punishment or a negative sounding voice. But some dog biting and mouthing is a result of behavioral issues that, if left unchecked, can lead to great unhappiness for you and your pet. Let’s learn more about dog biting and mouthing, especially in puppies, and find out how to correct this in the most appropriate way.

One of the first steps in correcting biting in puppies is to know what that biting means to them; biting can almost always be discontinued in a young puppy, and swapped for a more desirable response. Here is a video from a professional puppy trainer to teaches us to speak their language in order to help combat unwanted biting and mouthing:

Dogs are more visibly appreciative of affection and treats. They may not all be elegant, but many breeds of dogs certainly are as elegant as cats, and ones that aren’t are endearing for countless other reasons.

This first thing to do: Make up an ad with a current picture of your dog. A photo of another dog that looks like yours, downloaded from the internet, can help even if you don’t have a picture of your exact dog. Describe the dog in such a way that an average person would be able to recognize him if spotted. Be sure to include identifying information about him like what kind of collar or dog tags he or she is wearing, and any identifying features like scars or unusual colorations.

It should say: “LOST: Fido (or, your dog’s name) a shaggy, black dog with white face and paws, ran out from yard on Feb. 2, 2011 in the Pineview neighborhood of Our Town, SC around 6 p.m. Last seen in a silver collar with rabies tag and license. Is on itch and allergy medication. Family pet. REWARD. Call (610) 555-0000.”

When you use the term “family pet” it tends to motivate people to help out. Never advertise it as a “show dog,” “breeding dog,” “therapy dog,” or “search and rescue dog,” because this may make it seem valuable to anyone who would like to steal and resell your pet.

When you offer the reward, don’t tell how much it will be. You don’t need bounty hunters out competing for rewards by stealing dogs just so they can take them back and collect the money. This happens.

Always say that any female dog is spayed, because a thief will see an unspayed dog as a valuable one to sell to puppy mills for dog breeding.

If your dog is friendly, it is possible you could advise a finder to try coaxing the dog into a safe place such as a fenced yard or house to wait for being picked up – but always let the people know if your dog is a fear or anxiety biter, and in that case tell them to please just call immediately with the location where they saw him or her.

With these all star tips in mind, you will have a better chance of finding your lost dog. If you don’t get a response right away, don’t give up. Many missing or lost pets have come home after 6 months, a year, or even longer. Keep trying, and good luck.

This has been one of the hottest weeks on record throughout much of the continental United States, and there’s no relief in sight. In fact, the East coast is bracing itself for the arrival of the worst heatwave of the summer that will be slowly working its way into the eastern 1/3rd of the nation tomorrow through the weekend. With temperatures predicted to approach or exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, producing heat index values well above even that in many locations, we all know how uncomfortable this kind of extreme weather can make us feel. If we work outdoors for too long on such days, our health may even be put at risk; among the most dangerous heat related health issues are dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. And we don’t even have hair covering most of our bodies.

Imagine how this weather might impact your canine friends. All dogs have some degree of sensitivity to hot and humid (or even hot and arid) environments, since they wear fur coats year round, but especially breeds that are genetically disposed to colder climates. I have a Shih Tzu, for example; airlines will not normally even allow a Shih Tzu to travel aboard aircraft, because of the breed’s high sensitivity to hot temperatures. Since it is not recommended to keep a Shih Tzu outdoors in weather above 80 degrees for longer than 20-30 minutes, a dog like this could easily experience heat related illness during even a short flight. But remember: all dogs, not just the ultra sensitive ones, can run into trouble when things heat up. Here are some steps you can take to protect your furry friend during hot summer weather.

If you normally dress your dog in a shirt or sweater, make sure you remove it before taking him out for a walk — even in the morning, when it seems cool to you. A dog can’t tell you when he’s too hot or feeling faint. Be considerate.

Make sure your dog has plenty of clean, cool water to drink throughout the day. If you dog lives outdoors, you might consider adding some ice cubes to his water dispenser on hot days.

If your dog lives outside, be sure he has a comfortable and well shaded place to escape the blistering rays of the midday sun. You won’t really want to use a plastic, “Igloo” style dog shelter for this, as the sun will heat it up fast — and it would be essentially like putting your dog in a plastic oven. The best thing is natural shade. If none is available, bring your dog inside until it is cooler.

With these tips, you should find the heat wave to be much more comfortable for you and your best friend.

It’s that time of year when afternoon thunderstorms can some on suddenly and with amazing force. We humans may not find this to be much more than a nuisance, but many pets are seriously frightened by the loud sounds that thunder makes. Pets fortunate enough to have their owners nearby to cuddle up with during a storm have little to worry about, but there are countless pets for whom that is a luxury they cannot afford. Here are some things you can do to take your pets’ mind off inclement noisy weather, regardless of whetehr you can be there when it is happening or not. With a little planning ahead, you can almost entirely avoid having to put your pet through a weather related scare.

Let your pets stay indoors if at all possible and be nearby. When there is impending bad weather, close the curtains and turn on the TV or radio to provide something for your pet to watch and listen to. Soothing world or classical music are superior choices to much of what you will find on network television or the radio. Dogs and cats enjoy the aromas of natural herbal incense, just as humans do. Try different things to sooth your pet.

Make sure your dog has a safe hiding place. Frightened pets will seek out a small, slightly enclosed den-like place if they are fearful or stressed out. This could be under a bed or table, or between a piece of furniture and a wall. You could provide your animal a safe den of his own by giving him a crate with some of his favorite toys and a blanket inside. Chances are he will choose to hide there instead.

If you know a storm is coming, and that you will not be there to comfort your pet, make sure you give him amply time for a potty break before you leave. It might mean an extended walk, but it will be better than your pet having to wait out both your return and a storm later on.

Finally make sure your pet has a pet ID tag with identifying information that could be used to return him to you in the event that he should turn up missing somehow. If a storm were to damage a door, for instance, your pet might run away. In this way, people might be able to find him and help return him to you.

Dogs, like people, are subject to stress and all the manifestations of it in daily life. A person experiencing abnormal levels of stress usually finds a way to cope: it may involve healthy habits like exercising, eating healthier foods, installing an ADT Alarm System in your home to prevent robberies, or seeking treatment from a physician. A person who does nothing about his or her condition, on the other hand, is likely to exhibit unhealthy behavior and may not be able to cope at all. Human symptoms of extreme stress and anxiety can range from hostility and rage to heart-attack mimicking presentations and chronic fatigue. The person may “act out” in ways you might not think of.

Dogs have anxiety, too. But unlike us, they can’t communicate their feelings as clearly — at least, not in ways we humans can easily understand. Dogs suffering from anxiety tend to be far more demonstrative than people. Some dogs feel anxious when they are unable to follow their masters around the house at all times, or to be physically in contact with other members of their perceived “pack.” When they can’t do this, it can cause the most common variety of anxiety found in dogs: separation anxiety. This can be very difficult for dogs to deal with. They may show symptoms such as urinating or defecating in the house, losing weight, whining, scratching walls and other surfaces, chewing up objects and furnishings, pacing, barking, and destroying property. Obviously, all of these symptoms can have a negative impact on the relationship with this dog. Behavior that is a result of canine anxiety should be addressed quickly once the condition is suspected. A licensed veterinarian can help you decide on the best couse of action for you and your pet.

Some kinds of anxiety can be treated by making small changes in the dog’s environment: leaving a light on, or the tv going in the background can add warmth and a sense of presence to the room, giving a lonely pooch the idea that someone is nearby. Leaving favorite toys and a blanket within reach can also help comfort a dog in the absence of its owner. Sometimes, the only thing that seems to be of much help is medication. Clomicalm is a prescription tricyclic antidepressant that seems to work wonders for some pets who have had a demonstrated track record of high anxiety and high resistance to behavior modification efforts. Fluoxetine (known to humans by the brand name Prozac) is also effective in treating the anxiety in many dogs, and is available only by prescription.

See your veterinarian today if you believe your dog may suffer from anxiety.
